Reflecting Lights

{April 29, 2007}   Rumbling Hearts — Episodes 10, 11, 12, 13

Started marathoning episodes a bit, so I’m just going to group everything together.

So then, things started getting very hairy in episode 10. At the end of 9, Haruka finally noticed her hair. Ten starts with the same issue, and she begins asking questions. However, the doctor demands very careful answers to keep her from learning too much at once. Somewhere along the way, Mitsuki gets drunk with two men and nearly ends up in a love hotel with a stranger. Shinji rescues her from that, but ends up being the one she sleeps with instead. Mitsuki is broken, at best.

Meanwhile, Akane snaps and tells Haruka everything that’s happened, causing Haruka to fall right back into a coma.

Episodes 11 and 12 cover part of that space, focusing on Mitsuki and Takayuki’s break up (I think he would have forgiven her, but she didn’t give him the chance), Shinji beating up Takayuki, and Haruka waking up again at the end of episode 12, but this time she isn’t being lied to (and doesn’t remember waking up before.)

Anyway, in episode 13, things get a little wild again. Haruka makes it clear that she wants to learn about the 3 years she lost, slowly but surely. She asks Takayuki if he’s seeing anyone, and that it would be okay since it’s been three years and all. He answers that he isn’t–after all, he and Mitsuki have already broken up. However, later Mitsuki stops in and tells Haruka that they were seeing each other. The only difference is that Mitsuki lies and lies, saying she didn’t really love him and that any man would have done, he just happened to be the one beside her at the time.

I think if she’d been honest about her feelings, Haruka would have reacted differently. However, with the lies saying he didn’t really matter (basically, “I’m sleeping with your boyfriend because you’re asleep and he was there,”) Haruka slaps Mitsuki and tells her to get out. After that, she goes hardcore into her rehabilitation.

Takayuki construes this as Haruka being strong (and at least somewhat intends to confess about Mitsuki, I think,) until he gets to her door and hears her screaming at her legs, telling them to work. She’s incredibly angry about what has happened, about losing those years, and doesn’t understand what she did to deserve all of this happening to her. Takayuki freaks out and runs off into the rain. The words of his friends saying he’s so nice it’s cruel, that it’s his fault everyone’s in this situation haunt him. However, the words of Nurse Fumio telling him he can’t run away finally stop him. The episode ends with him facing Haruka and saying, “I need to talk to you, Haruka.”

Overall, this batch of episodes really pulled me in. Even my husband, who isn’t watching the show with me usually, watched the majority of these. It’s not his style of show, but it has such an interesting plot to it that it’s kind of refreshing. It doesn’t feel like the usual harem show at all. Even Mayu and Ayu are really growing on me. Early on their scenes felt too jolting, but now they’re blend nicely into the show (they’re a bit toned down, I think.)

The SD theatre ending of episode 13 was extra bizarre, with Haruka using her braids as a weapon and trying to strangle Ayu. Very weird. It was great.
