Kurenai — First Look
I’m a little late in getting this up, and it’s based on the first three episodes (rather than just the first two like the other Spring ‘08 series).
So, first impression is everything, and admittedly, the first impression from the opening sequence with the music and funky art was, “Paradise Kiss? Huh?” Of course, this is compounded when the next thing we see is in complete contrast, with traditional clothing, fighting, “inner sanctuaries,” abduction, etc.
But that’s okay. The OP starts fitting in a bit more as the series gets going, with the focus on Murasaki and Shinkurou, and the way they’re spending their time together. Tamaki, the woman in black, Ginko, and Yuuno add some much need side interactions, while Benika provides intrigue.
And most importantly, Yayoi gives me a character to crush on. She’s simply irresistible and I really can’t pinpoint why just yet. Is it because she waits outside that apartment day in and day out? Is it how adorable she looks when she’s playing games on her cell phone? Is it just her appearance? I don’t know, but she’s definitely ‘crush’ worthy.
The colors are not too bright, but are very vibrant. The art isn’t too different from the norm, but at the same time you’re not going to confuse the series with Harem Series 2338 either. Voice acting isn’t exactly spot-on per se, but it’s not bad either. Yuuki Aoi sometimes struggles a little maintaining Murasaki’s childlike voice (this is most obvious in episode 3), but for someone without voice acting experience, she’s doing admirably.
I can say this is likely my second favorite series of the season, just behind Allison and Lillia (yes, I’ll write about that later–I had a presentation and 20-page paper due last week). It’s nice to look at, interesting, and also has a lot of very fun scenes. I’m really looking forward to seeing more.
