I haven’t been much in the mood to watch this series for awhile. I really don’t like Yamada, and I really miss characters like Miyata and the other early fighters. However, while driving home from yoga today, NPR’s “Fresh Air” was discussing an upcoming Mike Tyson documentary film. It got me thinking about boxing, and once I got settled in at home, I just felt the drive to watch a couple of episodes while the mood still struck me.
This is what I’ve been waiting for. Sure the episode had some issues, but overall, the magic is back.
So, got through another 4 episodes…
Introduction of the newest opponent and challenge for Ippo.
It’s been weeks since I’ve actually watched these episodes. I’m hoping my notes will refresh my memory, but it’s unlikely…
They really got straight to it with the final match up. Usually they take up nearly the entire first half of the episode, perhaps more, showing last minute training for both boxers. This time they shortened the lead-in a bit to focus more on the fight. We do get a brief view of normal life. It seems Ryo is a bit more negative about his job situation than he should be, at least in his current position. His boss seems to respect him fairly well, and has a soft spot for little Kumi.
And in today’s episode we get to hear a bit of the expected sob story of the Mashiba family.
Miyata vs Mashiba semi-final match–and away we go.
It’s time for Aoki’s match! He wins! I was glad to see it, given that the way he and Kimura talk, neither of them ever seems to do particularly well. Poor Aoki though, after the packed stands for Hayami, the curtain-raiser match, all of the girls left leaving just a handful of spectators.
A slightly uneven episode, but overall pretty good. Takamura’s moment was entirely too short for my taste though.
